Understanding MEPC.107(49) – Bilge Water Discharge Regulations

The MEPC.107(49) – Bilge Water Discharge regulation, established by the International Maritime Organisation, focuses on pollution prevention for machinery space bilges on ships.

These guidelines require vessels to have equipment that effectively reduces the oil content in bilge water discharge to 15 parts per million (ppm) by volume or less. This is achieved through approved systems such as separators, filters, or coalescers, ensuring ships comply with stringent environmental standards to protect marine ecosystems.

Under this directive, ships must also be equipped with a 15 ppm bilge alarm, which alerts crew if the oil content exceeds allowable limits.

This system supports operational compliance to MEPC.107(49) regulations by automatically stopping illegal discharge in the event of elevated oil levels.

Rivertrace offers cutting-edge solutions like the Smart Bilge 15ppm Oil Content Monitor to support ships in achieving regulatory compliance and protecting marine environments, ensuring cleaner seas for future generations.
