MEPC.259(68) – Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems.
2015 guidelines for exhaust gas cleaning systems.
See the MEPC.259(68) regulations on Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS), focusing on compliance and best practices to reduce air pollution in shipping.
Understanding MEPC.259(68) – Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Regulations
The MEPC.259(68) regulations provide guidelines for the installation and operation of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) on ships as part of the International Maritime Organisation’s efforts to reduce sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions.
This regulation, introduced by the Marine Environment Protection Committee, MEPC, allows ships to use EGCS as an alternative compliance method to meet MARPOL Annex VI sulphur emission standards.
Under MEPC.259(68), EGCS units must continuously monitor emissions, ensuring that SOx levels are within permissible limits by using methods like the SO2(ppm)/CO2(%) ratio.
These guidelines aim to mitigate air pollution from ships, thereby improving air quality and promoting environmental sustainability.
The regulation highlights the need for compliance plans and technical certification for EGCS units, underscoring the importance of effective emission controls in achieving global environmental objectives
Rivertrace offers cutting-edge solutions like the SMART-ESM a wash-water monitor for wet scrubber systems measuring and recording PAH, Turbidity, Temperature and pH.
This supports ships in achieving regulatory compliance and protecting marine environments, ensuring cleaner seas for future generations.
